self-care & appearance

what’s your favorite sheet mask?

i know how difficult it can be for people, especially young girls, to feel comfortable in their own skin amidst all these standards perpetuated in society about what it means to be “attractive”. i love makeup and the way that it makes me look, but i’m also really lazy and can’t find the energy to do it everyday. if you’re like this too, or just want to spend less time on your looks while still feeling confident in yourself, here’s a quick tip on what i do to help with that.

the goal is to minimize the time i spend on my appearance and as well as the amount of cringe when i look into a mirror. i narrowed it down to three basic things about my appearance that i wished could be a little different: my hair, my skin, and my eyebrows. i chose these three things because i feel the best about myself when these three features on my head look the way that i like. obviously, it will vary for you depending on your own preferences regarding your appearance.

skin
frequency: once a week
like i mentioned above, doing a face mask once a week goes a long way. i usually have very dry and patchy skin, but doing a face mask keeps my face looking hydrated and healthy with the results lasting for at least a week.

eyebrows
frequency: about once or twice a month
i like getting my eyebrows threaded because it just makes all the features on my face look more crisp and gives my face in general more definition.

hair
frequency: once every 4–6 months
i grew up really insecure about my super curly and frizzy hair and still find it difficult to embrace to this day. once i started working and making some money, i invested in the brazilian blowout keratin hair treatment and couldn’t be happier with the result. this treatment doesn’t straighten your hair completely, but instead makes it less frizzy and more manageable. i ended up with really soft waves and absolutely love the natural look it gives.

all of this being said, no matter how much or little you change about your appearance, you won’t truly be satisfied at the end of the day unless you’re doing it for yourself. confidence is created from within and not something you seek externally. the feeling created from the acceptance and validation of others is short lived and fleeting while a positive self-image is much more concrete and lasting. for all i know, i could really be walking around looking like a gremlin that just crawled out of a hole, but that doesn’t matter to me or cross my mind because i hold myself up to my own (healthy & realistic!) standards instead of trying to measure up to the standards of others. that’s why it’s called self care!
