Digital Nomads vs The traditional workforce
The workforce has rapidly evolved over the last few years, so much so that there is no longer a ‘typical’ worker. We are all working different hours, with different situations, which are now more likely to suit our lifestyles. Especially so, the Digital Nomad.
Often associated with the terms ‘remote workers’ and ‘location independence’, a Digital Nomad is ultimately someone who works for themselves, online, and as a result, doesn’t need to stay tied down to their desk or a specific location. They are able to hop to different locations around the world and are fully in control of how long they stay in one place. This relatively new type of workforce typically travels the world a great deal, and takes advantage of the ability to do so by not being pinned down to a set location. As long as they have an internet connection, they can work as normal, as though they were sat in an office in London or New York.
Due to changing attitudes, development of technologies and more, the modern, Digital Nomads are an entirely different type of worker compared to the traditional workforce.
Traditional working environments have usually consisted of an office with lots of people, sat in front of a computer screen. However, now there is no longer a ‘typical office environment’. Individuals could still be working in an office, or working from home or, for Digital Nomads, from any location around the world such as a coffee shop in Thailand or an Airbnb in France.
Previously, workers tended to have a strict 9–5 day and were tied down to at least a 40 hours working week. However, recent research has found that only 6% of people are now working 9–5 and it has become more common for workers to have flexible working hours to suit their lifestyle and commitments. Digital Nomads are increasingly finding the ability to have flexible working hours. They work for themselves, so are therefore more able to choose their own hours, with some working as little as four hours a week, and can have more time to make the most of their travels.
The development in technology has been a vital component in the evolution of the workforce. It was not long ago that bulky computers were a main feature in our offices. However, with laptops being offered at a lower cost, and also becoming more lightweight and easy to transport, these have become a much more common device to work from, especially for Digital Nomads. Individuals are able to pack up their entire workload into a compact laptop and travel around with ease. They can even rely solely on their mobile phone to work, as modern technology now allows us to have all we need through various applications which are readily available at the click of a button.
It is clear that employees are now being given more room be creative, whilst working more mobile and setting their own targets.
