The Secret Weapon Your Organization Isn’t Using

This sounds very much like what behavioral psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi coined as “flow” and what Daniel Pink, in his book Drive, identifies as the point at which you are truly intrinsically motivated in your work.

I would argue, however, that regardless of the environment, an individual would not be capable of achieving Deep Work unless all 3 aspects that Pink identifies as needing to be met in order to be intrinsically motivated are present:

  • Purpose
  • Mastery
  • Autonomy

Without these factors being present, no amount of distraction elimination will allow one to achieve the state of flow that enables Deep Work.
