This really resonates with me as the Chief Data Scientist (i.e., only data scientist) of a startup. I think there’s a real need for discussion of data science work that doesn’t involve using fancy algorithms, but requires pushing for cultural change among people who are domain experts but have never thought analytically or relied on data to make their decisions. I also find myself wearing multiple hats in any given day, and none of them require using the tools that fill the myriad data science tutorials on Medium and elsewhere. I’m glad you started this conversation, and I look forward to reading more about this from you in the future. I’ll also plan on writing about this topic and my experience, as I think it would help new practitioners have realistic expectations and play constructive roles in their jobs.
