Good question, and I have no idea at all but I can speculate on one out of many reasons:
I know our religious attitudes play a very big role in this.
Many of us have this idea that failure in any sense is of the devil. Quitting is associated with failure. By extrapolation, if one can disassociate themself from it then it means they must be good. Again this is my own speculation and I know there could be numerous other reasons.
