My friends are teaching me to be a better person.
A small ‘thank you’ to everyone who wished me a happy 30th
No, no, I don’t want to be that annoying ‘look at what I got for my birthday’ brat. So forgive me if it comes off that way.
What I am trying to do here is mention a few of the things that really touched me from my birthday party. And also, tell a story (I have to write every day after all :D .)
First of all, the flood of comments that I got on medium in response to my birthday post were amazing. I was so scared my day would be ruined because of my feelings. I am grateful to each and every one of you who took the time to wish me the best, and encourage me. I appreciate it, and am sending nothing but love your way.
I’m also really grateful to all my friends who wanted to be with me but who couldn’t make it, and those who wished me a happy birthday in many other ways.
So let me tell you how it all went down:
My friends didn’t laugh at me few months ago when I told them I was going to have a bouncy castle party. In fact, they promised to help me plan it. Little did I know how far they would go…
Few minutes into the party, I was surprised with an actual ‘birthday princess crown.’ This thing had blinking lights. Amazing.
And I even got a badge too!
And then there were the cupcakes other friends decorated to look like the party attendees. Did you ever see a ‘black woman with afro’ cupcake so pretty?
Another friend who was in the country for the weekend came all the way in the morning to spend just few hours with us, and caught the evening train back to London.
Mid way into my party. Chloe sneaks off to get something from her car, and reappears with a frikken’ castle piñata!!!
I felt like a 30 year old kid.
So imagine my joy to have a three-layered cake lovingly baked by another friend. Chilli-chocolate top layer. I didn’t even know that was a cake flavour!!!
The kindness and thoughtfulness that went into everything directed towards me from my friends is so touching.
Opening up this gift to find this book that my friend knows speaks about my passion, says a lot about them believing in my dreams.
Being given a bottle of wine (because as sophisticated as I want to be, I have not found wine I actually like) by another friend because she is on a mission to find one that I will finally like, makes me realise how caring she is. She even took the time to explain a little bit about the background of the wine.
Yes, I got lipstick too. That should go without saying. I wear it as I type this. My spectrum of reds is expanding. Thank you.
Friends remind me how wonderful it feels to feel loved and appreciated. And what stands out to me in all this: how special a tailor-made gift/word/action can make one feel.
I am very grateful.
My lesson is that as a friend, being specific about something which you know will particularly make someone feel better no matter how small it may be, makes all the difference. My hope is to be as good a friend as they are to me.
And with that I ask to kindly be allowed to remain on this birthday high for today. Tomorrow I will be back to my falsely modest self.
God bless you all.
