I am originally from Chicago, but spent some years in the southern education system. It was quite a culture shock for me learning history in the south. You’d almost think the confederates won the civil war. I was always taken aback, even in my youth, by how heavily emphasized the confederacy was. In the north, the union is hardly ever mentioned. I think I had to go out of my way to learn about the civil war in detail. I can see how easily children can be influenced into racial bigotry just through their environment. There is no other way in the south.
