the positions I’d be offered would all be unpaid internships

I did two unpaid internships. The more recent one gave me the experience and connections that let me do what I do now: lead a startup that’s been in business (and cash-flow positive) for over four years.

The first time I was enslaved was at age 21, and by CBS TV, between my third and fourth years of college and the second one at age 43, at a one-man startup.

Neither of them were “slave labor”; both of them opened doors that would have remained shut to me. You take what you can get and you learn to leverage experience, contacts, and you learn to earn more senior responsibilities.
