Open Invitation: RPM Challenge

I have an idea, and it’s dangerous. It is a modified version of the RPM Challenge which happens every February. The original challenge was “a creative challenge” for musicians. The goal was produce an album (10 songs of original music) during the month of February.

My idea: RPM Deux—modify the challenge to include different forms of expression. In particular, I would like to modify the challenge to be a sort of extended practice and jam session. I say jam session, because I’m reaching out to my close friends—people I admire. This will all occur during February’s 28 days.

The benefits of this challenge seem to be two-fold. First, you get to create a ton, and develop a cool habit. Second, you will get to read (and listen) to some really cool stuff.

Here are the parameters (which are subject to change, if you feel like it, given that it is a jam session):
1) Post a long form piece on any subject (business, art, food!) five times per week.
2) Create/perform a piece of art (i.e. a chipmunk-electro tune, a (slam) poem, or a drum solo) three times per week.
3) Share it all, when possible, online (i.e. on Medium, Tumblr, Wordpress, Facebook, Instagram, etc)

My plan is to compile and publish a physical collection (book) to be shared with participants as a present (read: prize) in April. I’ll also release a demo tape of all recordings via Soundcloud.

If you like the idea of this challenge, but cannot participate, feel free to modify it as you wish. Can’t complete it this month? Well, do it next month. Gather a group of friends or coworkers and create cool stuff. Don’t want to write and make music? Well, choose your form of expression and challenge yourself.

The only rules are: 1)make it challenging; 2)have fun; 3)share it all.

Feel free to contact me. I’d love to hear about your forms of creative expression.
