Exploring Montana’s Past at Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park

Rising 365 feet into the sky, Anaconda’s iconic smokestack once bellowed plumes from the copper smelters that drove the local economy. Though smelting operations have long ceased, this towering remnant of Montana’s industrial heritage now anchors Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park.

Constructed in 1918, the smokestack funneled exhaust from the Washoe copper smelter in Anaconda. The smelter operated for nearly 80 years, processing ores from Butte’s prolific mines. After closing in 1980, the stack became a state park focused on preserving this landmark.

Visitors can walk around the massive structure to appreciate its scale and engineering. Placards detail how smokestacks worked and the history of copper smelting in the “Smelter City.” There are also scenic views of the Anaconda area.

Inside the former smelter machine shop sits the Smoke Stack Center with historical exhibits and a gift shop. Displays cover Anaconda’s smelting legacy and the immigrant workers who toiled here.

Of note is the poignant presentation of “Black Lung,” an occupational illness that affected many smelter workers. There is also a theater screening informative films.

The state park encompasses over 300 acres with several miles of walking trails winding through the old smelter property. Visitors can observe remnants of the industrial landscape, including the ruins of brick smokestack flues.

The park also offers picnic areas, a disc golf course, a playground, and opportunities for biking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing. For stunning views, hikers can tackle the switchback trail ascending the smokestack itself.

Whether you’re interested in Montana history or outdoor recreation, Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park is a unique destination. This iconic landmark stands as a proud monument to the state’s industrial past.
