Poets Unlimited Update:

Meanwhile in the land of the Internet, we are approaching 7000 subscribers to the popular Medium publication PoetsUnlimited. Simultaneously there are about 200 poets expressing themselves in the feed, with fresh poetry popping up every day.

Most works are in the short to medium size, with the occasional (I won’t say odd ;) longer piece, making it great for a quick read of a handful of pieces with your morning coffee or while winding down at the end of your day.

Poetry vs Prose

Someone once said if you aren’t occasionally falling, you aren’t near the edge. I’m pleased to say we decline about 5% of submissions. Mainly these are for being too far over to the “prose” side of the prose/poetry dividing line. If a piece doesn’t employ some characteristics such as concise word choice, a sense of structure and/or rhythm (in the words - formatting isn’t so important) and/or the use of imagery/emotion through description/metaphor/simile then it typically falls more into the “prose” department.

Rhyme is a nice means of getting both the concise word choice and rhythm/structure in one shot - but it’s just one of many approaches so all structures are welcomed.

There are other poetry & prose publications on Medium. The decision to bound our space to exclusively poetry helps readers seeking poetic words specifically find that by visiting our publication. I hope those of you who occasionally have a piece declined for being more ‘prosey’ find another venue to share those pieces - often they are quite good within their genre. And it’s always great to see your next submission.

At the end of the day we celebrate the beauty, power and engagement of words and how words work together. Seeing the submissions coming into PoetsUnlimited every day is inspiring and fun.

I hope you find some enjoyment in it as well.
