A few month back (before ARKit was introduced) I started working on a project where I wanted to remove the background behind the user while he is shooting a selfie video. I used a chroma key filter and it worked better than I expected, but it requires too much technical knowledge from the end user to be usable by a larger audience (flat color background, no object on background, good lighting, etc).

One idea that was mentioned is that ARKit might be a good alternative, just “adding a plane behind the user” on which I would draw whatever I want to draw. I don’t have any experience yet with ARKit, so before I dive in, I figured I’d ask someone who knows for his opinion of whether this could work reliably.

Thanks in advance
