eSIM: THE VIRTUAL CHIP WITH BIG BENEFITS TO THE COMMON MAN.

eSIM, or embedded SIM, which fully stands for embedded Subscriber Identity Module is a relatively new technology that has started to gain traction in recent years. It offers a range of benefits and advantages over traditional SIM cards, making it an increasingly popular choice for consumers and businesses alike. In this article, we will explore the features, advantages, and disadvantages of eSIM and discuss how its implementation can ease lives globally.

WHAT IS AN eSIM?

Let’s look at what eSIM is and how it works. Unlike traditional SIM cards, eSIM is embedded directly into a device’s hardware, meaning it cannot be removed or swapped out. This technology allows for remote SIM provisioning, which means that a user can activate their eSIM on a new device without having to physically insert a new SIM card.

This is done through a process called Over-The-Air (OTA) provisioning, which enables a user to download the necessary credentials to their device from the network operator.

ADVANTAGES OF eSIMS OVER TRADITIONAL SIM CARDS

One of the most significant benefits of eSIM is its convenience it provides people. We no longer have to deal with the hassle of swapping SIM cards between devices, making the experience seamless and straightforward. eSIM also allows for the use of multiple numbers on a single device, which can be particularly useful for international travel or business use. Additionally, because eSIM is built directly into a device’s hardware, it is more resistant to damage, making it a more reliable option for users.

Another advantage of eSIM is its flexibility. Because users can download SIM credentials over the air, they can easily switch between network operators without having to purchase a new SIM card or go through a lengthy activation process. This flexibility is particularly useful for those who travel frequently or who live in areas with poor network coverage.

There are numerous cases of identity theft and fraud in Nigeria related to the use of a physical SIM. One example of a life situation of identity theft through a SIM card in Nigeria is the case of Mr. Olawale. In 2020, Mr. Olawale’s SIM card was stolen, and the fraudsters used it to gain access to his bank account and transfer funds to other accounts. The fraudsters had obtained Mr. Olawale’s personal information, including his name, date of birth, and bank account details, through the SIM card. They then contacted his bank and posed as Mr. Olawale, requesting a transfer of funds to other accounts. The bank, unaware of the fraud, carried out the transfer, and Mr. Olawale lost a significant amount of money. This is just one of many reported incidents of sim swap fraud in Nigeria.

Furthermore, eSIM offers increased security compared to traditional SIM cards. Because the SIM credentials are stored directly on the device, they are less vulnerable to physical theft or tampering. This added security can provide peace of mind for users, particularly those who store sensitive information on their devices.

BENEFITS OF USING AN eSIM

However, there are also some disadvantages to eSIM. For example, because it is a relatively new technology, not all devices support eSIM yet. Additionally, some network operators may not offer eSIM services, limiting its availability in certain regions. Another potential disadvantage is that users may be charged more for eSIM services compared to traditional SIM cards.

In terms of implementation, eSIM has the potential to make life easier for users globally. Its convenience, flexibility, and added security make it an attractive option for consumers and businesses alike. As more devices and network operators adopt eSIM technology, we can expect to see it become a more ubiquitous feature in the tech landscape.

In conclusion, eSIM is a promising technology that offers a range of benefits over traditional SIM cards. Its convenience, flexibility, and added security make it an attractive option for users, particularly those who travel frequently or who require multiple phone numbers. While there are some disadvantages to consider, the overall outlook for eSIM is positive, and we can expect to see it become an increasingly popular choice in the coming years.

“But our customers, are they ready”?

INNOVATIVE STEPS TOWARDS eSIM ADOPTION
We find this, amongst many tech trends interesting and are exploring solutions. Global eSIM market was valued at around $7.6 billion in 2020 and is expected to reach $21.5 billion by 2027 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.1 per cent over the forecast period. Though eSim implementation might be moving at a slow pace, we at Ouranos Technologies are making research in collaboration with various enterprises in order to bring the best to potential users.
