#BonfireStories — Introducing Filmmaker, writer and producer Andrea Lewis
Introduce yourself to the world
Andrea Lewis — Actress and Filmmaker
1. When it comes to storytelling, where do you get your inspiration from?
I get inspiration from my real life. I usually write about a mix of my own experiences and stories that my friends and family share with me.
2. What is the toughest challenge you’ve faced so far?
As far as filmmaking, every production has a challenge, and it always tops the last one you experienced. I’m not sure what the toughest one would be though…in reality getting funding is usually my biggest challenge nearly every single time.
3. We know that there is a message you as a filmmaker are conveying to your audience, what is that message?
The message that I’m always focused on and trying to show is normalizing the experiences of Black women and girls. I want to share representation for the little girls in the world who are like me.
4. As a filmmaker, what are some key lessons learned so far?
I’ve learned, that you have to be willing to go with the flow because nothing ever goes as planned. And believe in your vision, that’s what makes you an artist. There’s nothing worse than not sticking with your vision, it will usually cost you in the end.
5 .What do you know today that you wish you knew when you began your journey as a filmmaker?
I have a lot of patience now, much more than I did when I started and I really wish I had more patience when I started, I would’ve saved myself a lot of stress.
6. What would you say is your unique responsibility as a filmmaker?
I don’t think I have a unique responsibility as a filmmaker, I just try my best to be an authentic artist and I think all filmmakers have that responsibility to themselves. Do your best to share your story.
