Stay Away from the Boys Next Door

For years, James Deen has been held up as “the boy next door” of porn. He has been profiled on GQ, Buzzfeed and Elle. He costarred in a film with Lindsay Lohan. In some corners of the Internet, his fame has eclipsed his namesake’s.

Today, Stoya, his ex-girlfriend, accused him of rape.

Deen’s ex, Joanna Angel, has already come out in support of Stoya.

Indeed, many in the adult film industry and beyond have. The hastag #solidaritywithstoya has been coined to discuss the revelations contained in the tweets.

Statistics for rape in sex workers are infamously nebulous: not only is sex work illegal in over half the world, but it is also socialised as something shameful. These two factors make it tricky to poll sex workers, even anonymously.

But a public figure has raped a sex worker before.

In 2007, Boy George chained a sex worker to a radiator after telling him that he was “going to get what he deserved”. The pop star was out in five months, won an award and took part in Celebrity Big Brother. His crime was forgotten.

It won’t happen again.
