Understanding cat language and signals

Like humans, felines also need to communicate with each other, other animals and their human friends. However, sometimes the language of cat is confusing, and it is hard to understand what they are trying to say.

Humans rely more on verbal expression, cats are quite different, they use language that consists of body language, vocalisation and scent cues. Below are lists of interpretations of cat’s language, learn how to recognise the basics of cat language and understand what your cat is communicating to you.

Ears

Forward-ears: Your cat shows interest and feeling curious. For example, when they are finding out a toy playful.

Backward- ears: You need to be cautious; this is a sign that your cat feels frightened or doesn’t like what you’re doing.

Eye

Wide pupils: it means your cat is getting excited, and if it is a sudden dilation, it also means fear and aggression.

Tail

wagging tail:when your cat wags his tail back and forth, that means he probably is getting frustrated with something.

Tails up: it means your cat is welcoming you he is ready to be approached.

Curved tail: this means your cat is willing to play. You can pick up a toy and play with them.

Whole body language

Lying on the back, showing belly: This happens when your cat trust you 100%, they feel relaxed and not worrying about anything.

Rubbing against you: When your cat is rubbing against you, they may mingling his scents with yours and claiming acceptance, however, he won’t rub against you if he does not like you.

Vocalisation

Short meow: your cat wants attention, greeting you.

Soft pleading meows: he is probably hungry, or maybe wants to go to another room.

Plaintive meows: when you hear this, your cat could feel lonely or worrying about something, or maybe objecting something.

Chirping & Trilling :chirping occurs when a cat is interested in or provoked by prey — a bird, a squirrel or a rodent, for example. It’s more of an excited sound and less of a sound used to hunt.

Yowling :Probably the most irritating one which Signifies worry, discomfort, territorial concern or mating issues. Usually, it is a mating call or telling another cat not to come to this territory. Or, it sometimes means your cat is not feeling well.

Purring: All cat owners are familiar with motoring sound; it is soft and rumbling sound when your cat is in a good mood.

Cats may not like dogs that respond to what you say to them, however they do understand what you are saying. They just pretending not hearing you, so why bother not getting their reaction, you just talk to them the way you want to express your feeling and message to them.
