The Padre Island National Seashore is home to many different beach accessible camping sites. Bird Island Basin, on the northern end of the island, offers both day use and overnight beach camping sites. There are also primitive campsites located throughout the length of the island at Malaquite Beach and North Beach. These sites offer no electricity or water, but provide unobstructed views of the ocean and plenty of privacy due to their pristine location.

Other amenities available at Padre Island National Seashore include two boat ramps, two nature trails, several observation towers overlooking the gulf coast, restrooms with showers, a fishing pier, visitor centers and an array of activities such as kayaking, canoeing, swimming and more. Visitors can also explore local wildlife including sea turtles nesting on nearby beaches from May — August each year as well as sand dunes that provide an ideal habitat for bird watching.

Tent camping in South Padre Island provides a unique opportunity to experience the stunning coastal scenery of Texas’ Gulf Coast and is open year round. There are several different campsites in the area that offer tent sites with beach access, all just a short walk to some of the island’s best attractions and activities. Keep in mind, if you have two wheel drive vehicles, the beach camping area is secluded and at your own risk. Consider bringing a friend or family member with four wheel drive.

Visitor’s Centers

Malaquite Visitor Center, located in South Padre Island, is an ideal destination for anyone interested in learning more about the local wildlife and environment. This center features interactive exhibits and a wide variety of educational programs, such as interpretive walks, night hikes, and birding tours. Visitors can also take part in activities such as kayaking and fishing at nearby Laguna Madre. With so much to do and explore, Malaquite Visitor Center is a great place to experience the beauty of South Padre Island!

Camping Permit

Spend the night in Padre Island National Seashore with a camping permit! North and South Beach are free of charge, while Malaquite Campground ($14.00 per night or $7.00 for holders of Golden Age/ Access Pass) and Bird Island Basin ($8.00 per night or $4.00 with the same pass) require permits to stay overnight up to 28 days total (with no more than 14 consecutive). Pick your spot today by obtaining yours at any campgrounds’ entrance station!

Andy Bowie County Park

The most popular destination for tent campers is Andy Bowie County Park making it one of the best campgrounds. Located near the northern tip of South Padre Island, this county park has 70 sites with both water and electric hookups, as well as picnic tables and grills. The park is also conveniently located on a public beach, providing campers with easy access to the sandy shoreline.

Malaquite Beach Campground

For those looking for more of a primitive camping experience, Malaquite Beach Campground offers 11 walk-in campsites along the beach. With no electricity or running water available at these sites, they provide a great chance to get away from civilization and enjoy nature’s beauty in its purest form. Additionally, visitors can take advantage of amenities like fire pits and restrooms located nearby.

Packery Channel County Park

Primitive camping is also available at Packery Channel County Park, which features 22 campsites that are accessible only by boat. Boaters can take advantage of the calm waters around Packery Channel for some peaceful nights spent under the stars overlooking the Gulf Coast landscape. The camping area also boasts plenty of things to do during daytime hours too, like swimming, kayaking and fishing.

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Birders should check out Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge for exploring its abundance of birds native to South Padre Island’s coastal ecosystem. Tent campers visiting this refuge will find eight primitive sites where they can pitch a tent and watch birds such as herons, egrets, and ospreys soar overhead while they relax within one of America’s premier wildlife sanctuaries.

South Beach

If you’re looking for a fun beach vacation that has something for everyone, then look no further than South Beach! From the south end of Closed Beach to the Mansfield Channel, there are a total of 60 miles of shoreline just waiting for your camping adventures! Plus, there’s mile markers every 5 miles so you’ll never get lost. Best of all? It’s open to RV and tent camping — so get creative & have some good ol’ outdoor fun.

RV Camping

South Padre Island is a great location for those looking to go RV camping. There are plenty of places with RV sites to choose from, each offering a unique experience.

South Padre Island KOA

One great option is the South Padre Island KOA, located at 814 W. Hwy 100. This campground offers over 250 sites, both shaded and open-air, with full hookup sites and cabin rentals also available. It includes all of the amenities you need for an enjoyable vacation like WiFi, flush toilets and cable TV, as well as an outdoor pool and hot tub. Other activities include bike rentals, mini golf, a shuffleboard court, horseshoe pits, and a game room. There’s also a convenience store on-site selling groceries and supplies.

Isla Blanca Park

Another excellent option is Isla Blanca Park located just across the causeway from South Padre Island at 33174 State Park Road 100 in South Padre Island. This campground has over 300 RV campsites located near the beach or in one of their two large tent camping areas with electricity included in some sites at no extra charge. Amenities offered include restrooms with showers, a boat ramp, and pier, hiking trails, picnic areas with BBQ grills, and playgrounds for kids to enjoy.

Bahia Mar RV Park

For those looking for something more luxurious, there’s Bahia Mar RV Park which offers luxury RV camping right on a private beachfront location on Laguna Madre Bay with spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico. They have full hookups complete with 30 & 50 Amp electric service plus cable TV & internet access available at most sites as well as helpful staff to assist should you need it! Facilities include restrooms & showers, a heated swimming pool, coin-operated laundry facilities & much more.

Rules & Regs

Camping on the beaches of South Padre Island is strictly prohibited, with no camping allowed except in designated sites. Driving on the beach is also prohibited in most parts of South Padre Island, however, some areas allow driving at a slow speed and only during specific times and in designated locations.

Fishing is allowed either from a pier or from the shoreline, with fishing licenses required for those over 17 years of age. Swimming is allowed, but it’s important to be aware of the strong undertow currents and swimming should only be done in designated areas where lifeguards are present. Additionally, visitors must follow all rules and regulations posted by local authorities while visiting South Padre Island’s beaches.

These regulations can include limits on alcohol consumption as well as restrictions on what types of items can be brought to the beach (e.g., glass containers, and grills). In certain cases, pets may not be permitted on the beach or they may require special permission. It’s important to respect local wildlife when visiting South Padre Island’s beaches; fishing too close to shore or disturbing nesting birds may result in fines or other penalties. Additionally, campfires are not permitted anywhere along the coast so visitors must ensure that any cooking activities take place in designated areas only.
