I saw that Mercedes-Benz has already announced that “ future Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous cars will prioritize saving the people they carry”, which is I think, the only reasonable decision.

Quite aside from handwringing about trolley problems, as a sales issue, a car that might sacrifice you for a stranger would be unsupportable, I think. People are already uncomfortable with choices being taken out of their hands by autonomous vehicles, the notion of a moral calculus outside your control would be a bridge too far, at least as a public stance.

I’m sure internally the ethics are more complicated, you can’t sell a car that will mow down pedestrians to prevent miniscule chances of passenger injury, but as a starting point, you need to protect your customers, otherwise they soon won’t be your customers, one way or another.
