Facebook Video advertising is on the rise
Even the best minds at Facebook wouldn’t have predicted it would go this way. Ever since the day Facebook introduced video streaming, marketers, agencies and content producers have latched on to the phenomena like a leach. They have, rather, we have exploited it’s benefits up until it has nothing new to offer. And this happened within a year of its launch.
More than a year ago, Facebook generated on average less than 5% of the video on the internet. The situation has changed for the better now in 2016. Facebook conquers more than 40% of the internet’s total video viewership.
The entire play is a masterclass from Facebook. They let Google, with its YouTube, consume all the video streaming space. They watched players like Vimeo, Dailymotion, Vevo compete for the rest. Never did they panic. They knew for sure that with the user database they own and dependency on their platform, they can enter the arena anytime and grab the top spot anytime. It happened just like they planned.
While YoutTube functions as an archive of videos, Facebook is where trends happen and get noticed.
YouTube can still boost of higher dwell time. With it’s related videos and recommended section, viewers stay on longer and binge watch videos, at times losing their sense of time and purpose. Due to the low popularity of Google+, what you say on YouTube remains anonymous and are read mostly by strangers. On Facebook though, it’s more like a guilty pleasure. We skim through the video content, share and comment on it for our friends to take notice and know our opinion about certain happenings.
Advertisers, businesses have taken notice of this behaviour. More than just design and content, business pages on Facebook have started to post animations, videos etc. This trend is fuelled by media and news channels. They have the luxury of generating unique original content, which are then shared by their users.
It’s imperative for all businesses on Facebook to start using video as part of their posting strategy.
YouTube will remain the most sort after video platform on the internet. But Facebook has created a separate realm where video is published and consumed in an altogether different manner.
Let me hit you with an analogy — YouTube is the buffet, Facebook is the Fast Food of video streaming.
