On a planet, not so far away, there lived humans who thought it out of their concern to live a Zero-Waste Lifestyle and this happened…

E don happen, I don tell am…

Sad but nature makes no waste; she recycled everything. Waste is a human invention. Now we need to spend some effort to ‘de-invent’ it.

How? Let’s go Zero-waste!

You: Enipe?

Okay not so fast, let’s see what this means.

Zero waste is a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient, and visionary, to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.

Living a zero-waste lifestyle whether at home or in your business, means you strive to use as little single-use plastic as possible, instead opting for sustainable and reusable alternatives. In short, it means you send as little as possible to landfills, which can damage the environment and natural habitat around them.

“It’s just so depressing to see havoc being made on our planet and cultivating a Zero-waste lifestyle can curb the menace.”

Have you ever wondered what the benefits of zero waste are? When you adopt the Zero-waste lifestyle, this happens:

Zero waste reduces our climate impact.

“Zero waste is a critical local solution to a global climate change”

You’re probably unsure of what Climate Change is or how you contribute to it, but reducing, reusing and recycling is a key part of climate change strategy to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. If we prevent more solid waste from getting to the landfill, we prevent the emission of more toxic gases like Carbon dioxide, Methane.

Pollution has a solution

I often wondered “what an earth we would see if everyone is conscious of the environment” How about we start with you? How conscious are you about how your daily actions impact the earth? Instead of a use-and-throway approach, the zero waste approach reduces the amount of waste transported to the landfills thereby reducing environmental pollution.

Nobody:

Waste: Epp epp epp, den dey carry me go when I no know o

Promotes environmental and human health

Perhaps, the greatest risk that could result from environmental pollution is the detriment to human health. The earth was created to support the existence of humanity and the moment that purpose begins to fail is the moment we’ve failed to save what served us.

I grieve for the population in areas where there is no proper waste disposal method, the population living close to a waste dump whose health is at the mercy of a constantly polluted environment. Uncollected solid waste also increases the risk of injury and infection.

Prevents energy-related emissions

Recycling saves energy used to make new stuff. That directly reduces carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.

Protects our carbon sinks

Carbon is one of the leading greenhouse gases. Reducing, reusing and recycling can help prevent deforestation and land use changes that account for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Our world’s forests are some of the greatest carbon sinks on the planet. This essentially points to the fact that they absorb more carbon than they release. Zero waste seeks to preserve trees rather than the constant tree felling, zero-waste approaches seek alternatives that way we can protect our forests which are essentially the planet’s lungs.

Abi you wan choke earth?

Pulls down carbon.

Composting (an aerobic method of decomposing organic solid wastes like food waste into fertilizers for plants) doesn’t just reduce emissions going up; it can pull carbon down and store it in our soil, helping to REVERSE the carbon emission problem. Soil stores more carbon than forests or the atmosphere.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency[EPA], if we want to curb waste, the most effective way is to avoid creating it.

It’s time to prioritize zero Waste as a proven, cost-effective climate solution. By taking action now, we can take a significant chunk out of our climate impact and can buy ourselves the much-needed time to address our longer-term challenges around environmental sustainability.
