Every Breath You Take is a soft rock / new wave song by English rock band The Police, from their 1983 fifth and final album, Synchronicity.

It was written by band member Sting, and produced by the band and Hugh Padgham.

After the single release on May 20 1983, the song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles chart, becoming the biggest hit in the US and UK in 1983. It also reached number one in Ireland, Canada and South Africa.

Every Breath You Take won two (2) Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 1984 26th Annual Grammy Awards.

It is considered to be both The Police‘s and Sting‘s signature song and was ranked by Billboard as the number-one song for 1983.

American rapper Puff Daddy samples the song for his 1997 tribute I’ll Be Missing You, on which singer Faith Evans interpolates the chorus.
