Hunting seasons and map

Click Hunting Seasons button on start window and you will open the Hunting Seasons window:

Here you can swipe screen left and right to see different game categories and scroll up and down inside category. Some seasons are grouped, like regular and bow-only seasons for deer, so you will need to click group to see the details.

Click on any season and you will open map with that season’s WMUs (Wildlife Management Units) highlighted:

Zoom in to see more details where WMU borders are. Anytime on the map you can click anywhere and a pop-up with WMU/FMZ numbers will appear. Click on this pop-up again and you will see a menu to look-up seasons for this location, create new User Mark or Share this point as a link via messenger app like Text message or WhatsApp.

Also note a Google Map icons on the bottom. The arrow in blue diamond will open a standard Android navigation program with this location as a destination. The ‘map’ icon simply opens Google Maps with this location in center. This is useful if you want to search for some things in surrounding area (e.g. gas station).

If you click on Hunting Seasons you will see a Hunting Seasons window with seasons for all game categories for this WMU on one page. So you don’t need to jump back in forth in regulations to see what you can hunt in particular unit:

There are two hunting-specific features on WMU map. Click on Map icon (on top bar middle button on the right). Sunday gun hunting menu item displays additional orange layer where Sunday gun hunting is allowed. .275 Calibre menu item adds a violet-colored layer for areas where hunting small game is not allowed with use a rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre (see hunting regulations). Please turn them off when not needed as they slow down map.

Fishing seasons and map

The idea is very similar here. Click Fishing Seasons button on start window to open the Fishing Seasons window:

You can see one FMZ (Fisheries Management Zone) at the time. To change FMZ use top-left button to open FMZ list. There are three tabs : zone-wide seasons, additional fishing opportunities locations and exceptions locations. Click on any item and FMZ map window will open with this location in the center.

FMZ map has additional opportunities locations marked as little orange fish icons and exception locations as blue fish icons. On wide zoom they are clustered together. Zoom-in to see more detailed map:

Screen Navigation and Settings

Most of SmartOut windows have a logo icon in the top-right corner that opens navigation menu where you can jump to any area of the app.

The Settings menu opens user Settings screen:

The basic settings are:

‘Set of icons for User Marks’ (Standard, Extended = more hunting-specific icons can be selected, Handheld GPS = icons similar to what you see on Garmin GPS). Please see separate how-to article about User Marks.

If ‘remember last position’ is on then next time you open SmartOut and go straight to the map (no matter WMU or FMZ) you will be back in area that you’ve seen last. Otherwise you will see all of Ontario.

Map icons and border sizes change how big icons and how bold borders are on map.

‘Hunting seasons for’ is defaulted to Ontario residents with allows seasons to be listed in more compact readable format, not cluttered with non-resident seasons. Or vise-versa if you select Non-Residents in this setting.

‘Waterfowler Heritage Days’ — same idea.

Thank you for your interest!
