Day 19 — Journey [Reversed]

The latest journey that Devin and I took was this weekend to a lovely camp in upstate New York, followed by a Bridal Shower for her cousin. We got there with a Car2Go. We’ve been talking about getting a car for a little while now. The main purpose is to be able to make spontaneous escapes from the concrete jungle that is New York City. To be able to go visit family, friends that have become family and to be around nature.
To me that’s a very valid reason. As I’ve aged, my perspective on money and material possession has gotten more complicated but wanting a car to be able to enrich our lives via experiences is something I’m ok with.
Recently, like many others, I was listening to the 4:44 album by Jay-Z. It’s good so let me start with that. I didn’t expect anything from an old rapper. But I didn’t love it and the more I think about it the more problems I have with it. I think my biggest problems with it is that unabashed, biased love it’s received. People are shouting from the rooftops that this is a masterpiece and excited about how open and vulnerable he is. They are celebrating the grown up nature of it. I’m just surprised about how few people are expressing how untreatable an album it is. Does nobody want to talk about how out of touch he is? I’m supposed to be impressed by a multimillionaires sorrows? He turned down a $2 million investment and I’m relating to this how? I love all types of hip-hop and there are things on this album that embody the best parts of this beautiful genre (Story of OJ) but I also really have come to detest the focus on materialism.
Good job Hov. You showed that you are still relevant and got some stuff off your chest. I’m going to continue to contemplate whether we should get a car or continue to use car2go.
