Colm Cooper said that Cork’s defeat to Tyrone was an “opportunity lost” as the Rebel County surrendered a healthy half-time lead in Croke Park.

Ronan McCarthy’s side led by 2–4 to 0–5 at the break thanks to goals by Luke Connolly and James Loughrey, but Mickey Harte’s side recovered in the second half to win 2–15 to 2–12.

And Cooper, a five-time All-Ireland winner with Kerry, told RTÉ Saturday Sport that the Rebels had let a great opportunity slip through their fingers, referencing a goal chance spurned by Connolly when Cork trailed by just one point midway through the second half.

“Tyrone upped their intensity. We knew that something would be coming because they were in that dressing room a long, long time (at half-time),” said Cooper.

“To be fair, they turned it around in the second half. Mattie Donnelly had a massive impact going in full-forward. But I think they lifted their intensity all over the place.

“For Cork, it’s an opportunity lost, because they were in a great position, and on 55 minutes Luke Connolly had a great goal chance, just the handpass didn’t go to his chest and he kind of soccer-kicked it wide,” he said.

“I think that was a big moment in the match.”

Despite losing their opening two Super 8s fixtures, Cooper believes that Cork can take plenty of positives from their Championship campaign.

“Cork have made big strides, when you consider they got a right hammering off Tyrone in last year’s competition. They are back.
