Life is all about people and relationships. They make our life easier and add a whole lot of meaning in our lives. However, as we progress in our lives and make strides in our career and personal life, staying away from a few people become as important as mingling with the right set of people.

You may be emotionally attached to these people, but if you have changed for the better and other people are still the way they were in high school, they may not be conducive to your personal growth.

Relationships and people are important but there are a few types of people that you don’t need in your life. I have very few people in my life. For me, it is more important to have a few real quality people than have more people who do not serve any purpose. The same may not necessarily apply in my professional life.

With limited resources(time) at our hands, it is important to use it in the best way possible. And, there are three categories of people that you should not be spending (read wasting) your time with.

People who just take you for granted

Having a friend who takes everything from you and gives you nothing in return is a common phenomenon. In such scenarios, most of us either stop expecting or cut ties with the person.

Every relationship is ‘give and take’. The things that are being exchanged in the relationship may vary from one relationship to another. Love, respect, companionship, time, energy and inspiration can be considered as things. The give and take maintain an equilibrium.

If you are doing all the giving all the time, it is time to reconsider the relationship. Do you do whatever the other one wants and the same is not reciprocated? No one should be taken for granted, at least not by your friends.

People who don’t respect your time

Time is the most expensive thing in the universe. While you can have more money, you cannot have more time. No one can buy back time. For someone like me with time anxiety issues, people who don’t respect my time makes me want to run. While we may not be CEOs or prime ministers, our time is not less important.
Cancelling a meeting in the last moment, proposing a sudden meet up on a working day, arriving one and half hours late on a date only means that the other person does not respect your time. When someone does not respect time, it means that the person does not respect you. And, if the person keeps on doing the same thing again and again, you should stay away from these people.

People who are negative about everything

There are different categories of people and if there is one class of people that you should totally avoid is negative people. These people will blame everyone and everything for their failures except themselves. They always see the negative side of things. These people won’t be able to help you to become a better version of yourself. Because they will always mention about things can go south without giving any precautionary measures. They will bring you down and discourage you from living your dreams. They have a problem mindset and not a solution mindset. Dealing with them for a considerable amount of time will suck the energy out of you. Hence, it is best to stay away from these people.

Conclusion:

While people and relationships are important, not everyone will hope for the best or help you to achieve greater heights or become a better of yourself. Hence, we need to make conscious choices when it comes to selecting people we would like to associate with.

After all, if we don’t guard our time and the company we keep, who will do that for us?
