Don’t you think that the election of Trump was a rejection of both parties? Many people voted for Trump against the direction of longstanding Republican leadership. I believe that it was a complete rejection of the system as a whole and it just happened to have happened under the Republican party. If anything, it’s interesting to see who was in the Republican primary and what the right put on the table as choices to begin with. I think that Trump wouldn’t have won as an independent because it would have divided the right vote, but as you said, he doubled down on extreme right ideals that most centrists and liberals would like to believe don’t exist. I also think that we are seeing this in Congress.
