Today’s Visualization

Title: We Don’t Talk About Bruno: Who’s Singing?

Notes: I’m really happy with how this one turned out! This viz illustrates how the different characters’s parts intertwine throughout Encanto’s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

Tools: Tableau, Google Sheets, Adobe Illustrator

Reflection

Here’s the continuation of yesterday’s Encanto viz! I love singing along with all the parts to “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” so I wanted to visualize them as well. In essence, today’s viz is just sheet music without pitch or rhythm notation. It reads like sheet music–left to right, with each vocal/instrumental part usually getting their own staff — and simply shows the times at which each character is singing throughout the song. The many, intertwining parts make for a beautiful visualization if you ask me :)

Often, data visualizations should tell a clear story at first glance; this requires the creator to add coloring, annotations, and indicators of what’s important and how the visualization should be interpreted. This doesn’t mean that the creator didn’t do their job well, it just means that they can’t assume that viewers will see what they see!

In other cases, however, a visualization can show all of the data at once and invite each viewer to make their own observations and conclusions; this is the approach I took here. While there are many things I noticed as I was creating the viz (and listening to the song too many times over the past couple months), I didn’t want to push any particular message to the viewer. Instead, I presented the entirety of the song to (hopefully) provide a starting point for you to notice things for yourselves. If you have 4 minutes to spare, I hope you take the time to listen to the song while looking at the visualization to see what you can discover!

Today’s Recommendation

Disney Movie Locations

To go along with the Disney theme, enjoy this viz showing the different locations of the Disney and Pixar films.

Until tomorrow,
