6 steps to check an influencers’ followers

1. Follower/Following ratio

You can easily see if the influencer follows a lot of accounts. The following should not be more than 1000. If an influencer has 20 000 followers with a following of 5000, it’s a red flag. This could indicate a follow-unfollow strategy which of course isn’t good.

2. Engagement Rate (Likes+Comments/Followers)

Micro influencers with 10–50k followers should have an engagement rate between 3–7%. Smaller accounts should have over 7%. But it’s not enough to check likes + comments. Likes can easily be faked. Next step is to find a video post and check number of views (views/followers). Views are a lot harder to fake.

3. Comments

Number of unique comments: the more the better 😊. Check if comments are from influencers or smaller accounts (like you and me, if you aren’t an influencer). Good if a majority of activities is not from influencers. Sometimes influencers boost up each others posts to increase engagement rate.

4. Growth

Check if the influencer has growth spikes. It’s not “normal” to get high number of followers in a short period. Then it’s probably fake followers. A normal organic growth is what you want to look for. Socialblade has a free tool to check growth.

5. Audience Country

If you’re going to work with a bigger influencer, ask for a screenshot of their audience. Then you can see nationality on the followers. If the influencer is from France and has a lot of followers from a country with 15 hours time zone difference...it’s also a red flag. But bigger accounts usually has followers worldwide. This is more interesting to see if it’s a smaller profile (with business account).

6. Story Views

Another way to see if the influencer has an engaging audience is to ask for story views (screenshots). Same here, views divided by followers to see engagement rate.

Hope this could help your evaluation 😊
