San Jose, California — New Mexico Lobos broke their losing streak and secured their 20th win of the season with a commanding victory over the San Jose Spartans in California on February 17th, 2023. The final score was an imposing 96 to 68.

In the early first half of the game, the Lobos and Spartans seemed evenly matched. However, the Lobos began to pull away as the Spartans offense began to decelerate. There was a moment of concern when Jaelen House began to limp after making layup, but he stayed on the court and continued to contribute to the team’s performance. Jamal Mashburn was unguardable, scoring 15 points in the first half.

The Lobos showed why they deserved the early season hype as they ended the first half with a strong lead of 50–31. Morris Udeze had an outstanding performance with 17 points, 1 block, and 4 rebounds at the half, returning to his true form.

In the second half, the Lobos continued to dominate, leading 86–64 with just under 4 minutes left on the clock, at this point it was all smiles from New Mexico’s side. Mashburn made an impact with 27 points going an impressive, 9–11 field goal shots & 7–7 from the free throw line. With Jaelen House back on the court, he had 7 points, 5 steals, and 5 assists, his presence and leadership was felt throughout the game. Every player from New Mexico had a massive contribution, showing that the team is well-rounded and capable of achieving great success.

Udeze the star of tonight led the team in points with 31. Getting another double-double on the season. With 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, and scoring 9 of 12 free throws. The Spartans could not hold Udeze.

This victory will build the Lobos’ confidence going into the final games of the season. The team showed their ability to perform at a high level, and hopefully the fans haven’t given up hope yet.

Side Note:

As I commented on their press conference video. “Shoot more three’s. Defend three’s better.” The Lobos did that tonight. Defending well against the Spartans allowing only 6 out of 27 three point shots. Compared to their 7–11, which is higher than their season average.
