Fear Of Hitting A Pedestrian While Driving

Jimmy takes one last look in the mirror. I love this suit, he thinks.
It is a beautiful Wednesday morning. Jimmy leaves his apartment and steps into his car at 7:00 A.M. to drive to work. He has a very important meeting at 8:30 A.M. I should get to work with plenty of time to prepare for my meeting, Jimmy thinks.
Jimmy turns the radio on and begins his usual commute. He begins to think about the tasks that need to be completed before his meeting.
Fifteen minutes later, Jimmy begins to feel very anxious. Did I hit a pedestrian with my car while I was thinking about all of this?” Jimmy wonders.
I would have felt it if I hit a pedestrian, right? Jimmy asks himself.
Jimmy feels almost certain that he did not hit any pedestrians with his car but the slight uncertainty bothers him. He is unable to let go of the small uncertainty.
I’ll just turn around and double check, Jimmy thinks.
Jimmy turns the car around and takes the exact same route back to his apartment building. He is on high alert, looking for any ambulances or crowds of people. He makes it all the way back to his apartment without finding any proof of an accident.
Phew, okay, I didn’t hurt anyone, Jimmy thinks.
Jimmy starts his usual commute once again. By now it is 7:30 A.M. and he finds himself sitting in major traffic, which he usually avoids by leaving his apartment at 7:00 A.M.
Jimmy becomes anxious again, but this time about missing his important meeting.
He luckily gets to work by 8:15 A.M., but he is barely left with any time to prepare for the meeting.
This similar situation happens to Jimmy multiple times a week and begins to affect his life, as he is often late to work and other daily events.
This is so frustrating. What is wrong with me? Jimmy thinks.
Jimmy decides to meet with an anxiety specialist, who explains to Jimmy that there is a way to reduce this form of anxiety. Jimmy feels relieved.
