Local versus newbie can be a problem, sometimes, where jobs are concerned. I’m originally from the Midwest, and my parents tried early retirement in southwest Florida. Who you know matters a LOT more once you get outside the largest cities. And getting to know people can take time and a lot of patience in smaller communities. My parents were all but called Yankees to their face in the stretch of southwestern Florida they tried to make a new home. They stuck it out for around five years, then called it a day and went back to Indiana.
