THE EVOLUTION OF MACHINE LEARNING
LEARNING
One of the most basic properties of any living organism has been learning.learning from life, incidents, books, internet and almost every possible resource in this universe. An infant starts learning from its family, surroundings, society implying that the kind of person one becomes is highly impacted by the environment so it’s the responsibility of parents to provide that kind of setup for their child.
MACHINES
The most lucid way we can understand machines is that machines use power to apply forces and control movement to perform an intended action but modern day machines aren’t limited to that. New age machines are much more smarter still it’s us humans who design them so there’s no point in being afraid of an AI-Apocalypse(checkout The Terminator if you haven’t yet) implying the machines to become self-aware and decide to take over humanity but if you look closely to the definition of machines you’ll notice that it’s us humans who provides them with that power so just like the case with an infant, we the humans are the guiding elements to these machines,so does it imply that its humans who’ll bring the evil power into existence? Let’s dig in to find out.
Phase 1-The Evolution Rule Based This was the era of controlled programs that were just limited to controlled conditions and few situations like those involving where the processing and execution has certain limitations or we can say the outcome can be calculated or was finite, the best example being the all time wistful snake game.
Phase 2-Analysis Based Analysis involves use of heuristic approach means enabling a person to discover or learn something for themselves. In such cases we give the machines certain task and based on the available data we ask them find the most optimal solution for the problem defined. One of the most renown application of this concept can google maps which uses the Dijkstra’s algorithm to find the shortest path between 2 points on map.
Phase 3-Learning Based This phase has been in action for quite some time and has a major influence in variety of fields. The sudden rise in a lot of application is due to the availability of high computation power even in devices as small as earbuds with the latest iteration being the Google Pixel Buds which can adapt to your listening pattern and understand around 40 languages and can not only convert them in real time but mimic your voice as well in special cases. Some other substantial advancements are image-classification,drug discovery, emotionally intelligent bots.
The Evil-Power So far the implications have been great constructively but the real problem with every great power in world is that it has two sides like a coin.Today AI is being used to make extremely addictive products that take substantial amount of your daily life like facebook’s news feed being highly optimized to keep your attention on the screen and indulge you into scrolling endlessly but still if you observe its again us humans who choose to move to such platforms for refreshment and that’s not end of it when we take a closer look to the AI-threats coz recently facebook had to shut down one of it’s AI program, because it’s components started interacting in some language that the systems developed on their own without any human intervention. Whatsoever the consequences are in the end everything (now including AI as well) is an outcome of some desire and it’s the sole adversity that with great power comes infinite possibilities whether good or bad implying that in the end it’s us humans who’ll design destructive or uncontrolled machines but the main concern lies is the existence of solution of such situations which is
Decentralization-The Solution Elon Musk who is known for remarkable breakthroughs like SPACEX, TESLA has an AI research company ‘OpenAI’ explains the solution very easily by saying that ”Freedom consists in division of power and despotism in its concentration ” which translates to it’s our responsibility to make these systems unbiased remove any kind of change in its effectiveness due to humans or machine interaction. The most selling application of such concept is bitcoin which eliminates the middleman in astronomical number of transactions and removes despair but unfortunately it’s also helping online piracykings to access money without a hitch, but still the applications of such decentralized system are immense To sum up, everything can be controlled in this modern age it’s just that we need to design new systems more carefully and understand how actually all tech works at least the topmost layers.
