Making Self-Care a Priority

Due to upheavals in a some fundamental areas of my life — home and work — I have decided to consolidate resources by stepping away from the private practice space I share in the Mission. As many of my clients know, hyper-gentrification in the Bay Area presents its own unique social and economic challenges for residents and business owners alike.

In addition to these two basic issues, the 45th Presidency and recent events in our country, linked to the rise of overt white supremacy, have forced me to take a critical look at where exactly I put my time, money, and energy. I have begun to ask myself: who am I supporting directly and indirectly? I find myself experiencing internal conflicts as I answer these questions.

As I think about it, and related to my making certain decisions about being a healer in a capitalist society, I feel it is the responsibility of healers to make social, economic and political choices that are not at odds with their psyche.

When I consider that one of the reasons why I chose a healing profession is because it would force me to be in the mindset where I would take care of myself, I am now called upon to do so.

This does not mean that I am abandoning my current clients. On the contrary, I will be happily available for home visits and will be able to offer sessions from other healing spaces. Indeed, the title of this very essay is to remind all of us that, despite any difficult changes we face, we should not neglect self-care and self-healing, and that we should never abandon ourselves.
