I wasn’t supposed to be here.

My highlighter’s not working??? But like

“You see, my “success” is not my own, but rather, a confluence of my parents’ work ethic, socioeconomic environments that allowed me to develop, and a good dose of luck.”

“My point here is not to exaggerate the adversities I faced or to flaunt my fortunate circumstances. My point is that we live in a society where the circumstances of our birth often dictate the outcomes of our lives. Where our access to opportunity — or lack thereof — determines our future. Where our access to financial, health, and educational security is inequitable and skews to those that already have it.

And I don’t think that’s right.”

and my favorite

“In the end, I know most of this doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that I just graduated. But I cannot help but to reflect on the perfect storm of events that have led me to where I am today, and I cannot help but fear that that perfect storm will no longer brew for people born into situations like mine.

I wasn’t supposed to be here. But hopefully, we can build a society where more people like me will be.”
