I just read this and I can’t resist commenting… my story is eerily similar. I, too, was diagnosed at 35 with stage 4 colon cancer with liver mets. I, too, had three young children at the time. I, too, panicked a little bit. That was almost 17 years ago for me. Here are 3 truths that helped me then and I hope help you now…

  1. You can do anything for 15 minutes. When you have hard things to go through (chemo, surgery, moments of panic, whatever), just focus on getting through the next 15 minutes and breathe.
  2. Every day that you wake up is a gift. It’s usually a sign you’re not going to die today.
  3. Statistics are the stories about other people. They don’t have to be your story. They are useful for your doctors but probably not something you should dwell on.
