Dave knows a lot about you…and he tells you how.

One sunny day in Brussels, random people from the street were invited to participate in an upcoming TV program. They walk into a large ethereal white tent, with exotic music playing in the background, and meet Dave, a psychic, with a spiritual look on his face. With a hug or a touch of hands Dave starts giving each participant information about their lives — the name of a dear friend, a school or the color of their house. The participants are fascinated.

Until things start to get terribly uncomfortable.

Dave starts asking them about extremely private details of their lives — negative bank balances, amount spent on drinks and clothes, boyfriends.

Amazing. But what is more shocking is the truth — Dave is no psychic. He is an actor getting all the information from a group of hackers in dark masks who are mining public information from the internet as Dave speaks to them.

The event and accompanying video were all part of a campaign organized by Febelfin, a Belgian non-profit organization that promotes safe internet banking, and was aimed at raising awareness among people about the dangers of sharing information online.

As a computer engineer and also a digital marketer, I think the campaign was very successful in bringing attention to something that most people do without thinking twice — sharing confidential information on social networks and other sites that aren’t as private as they assume. The video sent this message in a playful but dramatic way that really caught the attention of the audience. The video went viral on social media and received more than 13 million views on Youtube. The Duval Guillaume Modem communication agency also won several awards for the campaign. Several financial and government organizations used the campaign to increase awareness amongst their own followers.

The Dave campaign sends a simple but very impactful message. Your entire life is online… and it may be used against you.
