Inflammation is body’s natural response to tissue damage and/or microbial invasion. When your immune system identifies an irritant, damaged cells, or pathogens, it starts to heal the body. The body’s immune system starts releasing the white blood cells to surround and protect the affected area, causing visible redness and swelling.

In diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease and others, the immune system of your body automatically triggers an inflammatory response against the body’s healthy organs. These are known as autoimmune diseases when the immune system attacks the body and damages the healthy cells and tissues. These conditions take a toll on person’s overall well-being.

Inflammation: An Overview

Inflammation is of 2 types

· Acute Inflammation
Acute inflammation, is body’s natural response to circumstances which include

· when you have hurt yourself

· when you have a cut on your skin

· when you sprain your ankle

· when you have a sore throat, appendicitis, or acute bronchitis,

· when you have an infected ingrown nail.

This is a short-term condition and the effect usually goes away after a few days.

· Chronic inflammation

This is a long-term condition. Often, lifestyle and environmental factors, such as lack of exercise, excessive weight, poor diet, pollution, smoking, and alcohol consumption can cause chronic inflammation.

In chronic inflammation due to Auto Immune disorders your body sends an inflammatory response to something it perceives as a threat which is actually not a threat at all. It sends white blood cells to that part of the body to fight the threat but after reaching the spot, the white blood cells have nowhere to go and nothing to do. As a result, they start attacking your tissues and organs.

There’s a second scenario also. It happens when there might be a real threat but your body cannot identify it and you do not feel any immunity response. As a result, the inflammation may persist for long and sometimes, forever.

Chronic inflammation is usually linked to a wide range of ailments such as heart conditions, obesity, chronic pain, poor sleep quality, and overall decreased quality of life.
