I've had several discussions with friends and colleagues and we generally arrive at the conclusion that in the near future, with a predominantly digital economy, programming will be a skill on par with reading/writing and basic arithmetic and basic algebra, everyone will have to learn it at some point.

And while not everyone who learned algebra in high-school went on to become Isaac Newton, or even to get an engineering degree, nor everyone who studied literature in high-school became Shakespeare, the necessary mindset to have at least a basic understanding of what computers are and how they really work will be a mandatory skill, beyond just being a point-and-click user of GUIs.

My point is, I don't see the bad in making coding mandatory for both of your children even if they don't enjoy it, it will help them in the near future.
