My journey into Reading

This week I was planning to write about my reading habits. Coincidently, I read a transcript of an interview of Naval Ravikant(@naval), co-founder of AngleList. In the starting of his interview, He told about his reading habits and why reading is so important. He calls himself conscious bookworm. This transcript motivates me more to write about my reading habits.

2 years ago, I wasn’t into reading. I didn’t like reading, I was movie person, I like to watch stuff. But, when I joined internship, I came across a person, who changed it, who motivated me to read. Vidit Shah, (@vidit-shah) CEO of April Innovation and my mentor. Whenever you go to him, you will find him reading. By seeing him, I also start reading. As time passed, I started liking it.

There is nothing like good or bad reading. “Reading” itself is good.

Initially, I had a question “What should I read?”. I couldn’t find the answer to it. So I started reading anything that comes to my way. I started reading blogs about technology, philosophy, humour, just anything. I also didn’t like to visit the site to read. So, I went to Gmail, created an email id and subscribed to the newsletter of the sites which I liked to read. Now, I get more than 100 newsletters delivered daily to my doorstep (email) which I guess, is more than enough for the day. And this habit of reading anything increased my knowledge in every field.

Another question which I had initially “Why should I read?”. I didn’t get an answer to this either. I just started by watching Viditbhai. Today, I can say that world is growing with the speed of light and to match its speed you will have to gather as much information as possible. To gather the information you will have to read as much as possible.

I don’t like to read lengthy books, novels etc. I like to read stuff which completes quickly. So, if you don’t have book/novel or don’t like to read them like me, it’s perfectly fine. There are lots of other things to read like, blogs, columns, papers, articles etc. You can start with it.

Reading, the process will water your mind and you will learn to develop your own content, opinion, criticism, appreciation and what not !

You will see a day in your life where you yourself will decide what to read and what not to read rather than your teachers , the way once they used to decide!

P.S: I am also learning to read lengthy books. :P
