The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has noted a strategic pivot in Russian military operations, hinting at the reactivation of the Soviet-era Myasishchev M-55 Geophysica high-altitude aircraft, known to NATO as Mystic-B, for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions in the vicinity of Ukraine. This observation points to a possible bolstering of Russia’s ISR capabilities, with the MoD estimating a 55–75% probability of the M-55’s return to active service.

The M-55, a vestige of Soviet aeronautical ambition, has been repurposed from a Cold War spy plane to a high-altitude sentinel for scientific inquiry. Its capability to ascend above 70,000 feet has provided scientists with a lofty platform to study atmospheric phenomena, offering insights into the ozone layer and climate dynamics from an exceptional vantage point.
