On Sunday, the WNBA decided to upgrade Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter’s foul against Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation after reviewing the play.

During Saturday’s close 71–70 win by the Fever, Carter delivered a shoulder check that sent Clark to the ground just before an inbound pass in the third quarter. At the time, officials called it an away-from-the-ball foul and did not review it further, categorizing it as a common foul.

Reflecting on the incident, Clark said, “I wasn’t expecting it. It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did.”

Carter declined to comment on the play or on Clark after the game.

Additionally, the league fined Sky forward Angel Reese $1,000 for not making herself available to the media post-game. Chicago Sky was also fined $5,000 for not ensuring all players adhered to the league’s media policies.

The WNBA has the authority to reclassify a foul as flagrant or upgrade it to a flagrant after reviewing the game footage. While they upgraded Carter’s foul, they did not impose any fines or suspensions on her.

Players accumulate points for flagrant fouls throughout the regular season and face suspensions if they reach a certain threshold.
