I totally agree with you. Inclusion at every stage of filmmaking — from development to production to marketing and distribution — is important. It’s something Ava DuVernay has spoken about as well. It’s not just about diverse casting, it’s also about hiring inclusive crews and having producers and executives who are of various backgrounds and perspectives.

Unfortunately, the Academy Awards gets more publicity than behind-the-scenes industry stuff, but at least it has started a conversation. This piece is focused on how the Academy’s new membership and social media helped turn that conversation into action. More work still needs to be done.
