6 things to ask when interview for a remote job

These are all great points on accessing a telework position. I have been teleworking for about 9 years now before it became “a thing”. Somethings that I have discovered throughout the years.

  1. Your advancement possibilities are not as broad as if you worked in an office. One time one of my Executive Directors in a previous job laid off one of her teleworking directors because it was not a good idea to have managers doing “remote control management”. It may be true in other places as well. So, if you ware a individual contributor and you are happy with that role, then telework will be suitable for you. If you want to become a Vice President some day, it is not the way to go.
  2. Different groups interact differently and use tools. Our main tool of communication is Skype chat, but most of our formal interactions are done through the ticketing system. This provides you with a way in which all actions are accountable in a single location. This is important in the role that I do because I have to interact with three development teams in three different timezones. Not using “modern tools” might seem like a put off, but as long as there is team work and the work gets done, then, the communication mechanism is not as important as using it effectively. We are also bound to submit a nightly report for the tickets that were worked on. Not only to help management, but to help the ones that are working in the “next” time zone.
  3. This dovetails on those managers that want their remote workers to be available at all times. One thing that will slide will be your meal times and physical activity. Yes, you are bound to put a honest work day, but let yourself time for you to sit down at the kitchen table for lunch and to have some time to exercise or take a walk. In addition to a growing waistline, you will be bound to suffer of cabin fever or worst depression. If your the job or the management does not allow time for you to at least have three meals, some time to relax and sleep, then it is not going to be a good place to be for the long run.

Cheers!
