A Brief Study On Pradaxa.

Pradaxa is a prescription blood thinner which is the brand name of the drug Dabigatran. It is used to treat and prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke in people.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the medication for treating patients who are at the risk of blood clot formation or stroke. In April 2018, FDA gave full approval to a Pradaxa bleeding antidote.
Who needs dabigatran?
People who have had a health problem caused by a blood clot including the following are treated with Pradaxa:
· stroke
· heart attack
· blood clot in the leg — a deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
· abnormal heartbeat or atrial fibrillation
· had surgery to replace a hip or knee joint
· blood clot in the lungs — a pulmonary embolism
The most common pradaxa side effects include:
· stomach pain or discomfort
· indigestion
· heartburn
Patients should seek emergency medical attention if there is any form of symptom of spinal blood clot. Get the help of doctor immediately if:
· any bleeding that will not stop
· blood in your urine or stools, black or tarry stools
· coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
· pink or brown urine
· headache, weakness, dizziness, feeling like you might pass out
· easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin
· joint pain or swelling
· heavy menstrual bleeding
Patients should not take Pradaxa if there is any history of allergy to dabigatran or if there is any of the following:
· any active bleeding from injury or surgery
· an artificial heart valve
· there is stomach ulcer
· recent or recurring bleeding in intestines
· there is any form of kidney diseases
· if you are on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug
· if you are more than 75
Some patients, who are not aware whether or not they are allergic to Pradaxa, should be careful of the following symptoms:
· chest pain or chest tightness
· swelling of your face or tongue
· trouble breathing or wheezing
· feeling dizzy or faint
Of the many pradaxa side effects, it is known to cause serious blood clot around the spinal cord if the patients undergo spinal anesthesia or spinal tap. It can cause long-term paralysis if:
· the person has a genetic spinal defect
· is placed with spinal catheter
· there is history of spinal surgery or repeated spinal taps
· is on other medications that prevents blood clots
Pradaxa Lawsuit
Thousands of victims filed lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of the drug citing instances of hemorrhaging and uncontrollable bleeding and other pradaxa side effects. More than 4,000 lawsuits were settled in May 2014 worth $650 million.
Recalls and warning
Boehringer Ingelheim recalled the single manufacturing lot of Pradaxa 75 mg capsules in November 2012 stating that there is a potential packaging defect. Patients should not stop taking the medicine or change the dosage of the same without the advice of the doctor.
The FDA now requires a black-box warning on the drug as it causes people with atrial fibrillation taking this medication being exposed to further risk of the event when they stop taking the drug.
