14 Iconic Lighthouses around India
Do you love lighthouses? Oh, I love them. They are so symbolic, pointing the way in the dark for those who have lost in the sea! Being a coastal country, India does have many beautiful lighthouses spread across the peninsular coastline.
1. Mahabalipuram Lighthouse, Tamil Nadu
Mahabalipuram Lighthouse is one of India’s oldest lighthouses which was built around 640 AD by the Pallava King Mahendra Pallava.
2. Kovalam Lighthouse, Kerala
This 30 meter high lighthouse is often said to be the most beautiful feature of the Kovalam Beach at Trivandrum, popularly known as the Lighthouse Beach. You can see Poovar on one side and the famous Beemapalli Mosque on the other, from the observation platform at the top.
3. Beypore Lighthouse, Kerala
The six-sided tower on the south shore of the Chaliyam River is a guiding presence for those out at Arabian Sea, near Kozhikode. If you can climb to the top of the tower, a pleasing view of Chaliyam coast and Beypore town awaits you there.
4. Marina Lighthouse, Tamil Nadu
The famous landmark on the Marina Beach in Chennai is this lighthouse. It was built by the East Coast Constructions and Industries in 1976. It is now open to public and is soon becoming the favorite tourist spot as it gives a satisfying view of the alluring Marina Beach.
5. Fort Aguada Lighthouse, Goa
This four-storeyed Portuguese lighthouse constructed in 1612, is considered to be the first of its kind to be built in Asia. It is surrounded by beautiful places like Panjim with its Miramar and Caranzalem Beaches.
6. Rameshwaram Lighthouse, Tamilnadu
Located on the South East Coast of India, this lighthouse is an important landmark at Rameshwaram which had been erected to guide fishing boats. It was established in the year 2005.
7. Mangalore Lighthouse, Karnataka
This lighthouse is located near Suratkal Beach, Karnataka. On paying an entry fee of Rs 5 per head, you can get a breathtaking view of the coastline from the top.
8. Cape Comorin Lighthouse, Kanyakumari
The lighthouse tower was constructed in 1971. You can enjoy a pleasing panoramic view of the oceans from the lighthouse and hence it is one of the most popular tourist spots near Kanyakumari.
9. Pondicherry Lighthouse, Tamilnadu
This is one of the most iconic landmarks of Pondicherry city, built in hexagon shape with colors of black and white. It is located very close to the Pondicherry Beach. This new lighthouse was constructed in 20th century by the Government of India.
10. Dwarka Lighthouse, Gujarat
The Dwarka lighthouse is situated on the shore of Arabian Sea near Gujarat. It offers a serene atmosphere that is perfect for relaxing.
11. Kilakarai Lighthouse, Tamilnadu
The Kilakarai Lighthouse is located on the beautiful shore of the Kilakarai Beach, Tamilnadu. It became functional on 2nd October 1979 and later its light source was modified on 30th April 2003.
12. Mahe Lighthouse, Kerala
The Mahe Lighthouse was built in the year 1893. It is situated on the south side of the entrance of Mayyazhi River at Mahe.
13. Manapadu Beach Lighthouse, Tamilnadu
The Manapad Lighthouse was constructed in 1888. Its main function was to guide the fishermen living there who made a living by diving for pearls in the sea.
14. Kovilthottam Lighthouse, Kollam
This 18 meter tall lighthouse tower, painted with black and white alternating bands, is situated at Kovilthottam, Kollam. The main function of the lighthouse is to serve the port of Neendakara situated at the entrance of Ashtamudi Backwaters.
