The 12 houses in astrology can be grouped in many ways based on their features. Some common groupings are trines, angles, apoklimas, panapharas, upachayas, purusharthas etc. Understanding each of these groupings is critical for understanding the relationship & functionality of the houses.
However, these groupings are common knowledge. Most astrologers know about them & actively use them in their practice. Today, I’m starting a series of articles to focus on a different way of understanding the houses — according to axes.
Each house can be thought of as part of a pair with the opposite house. Thus, there are 6 axes: 1–7 , 2–8 , 3–9 , 4–10 , 5–11 & 6–12. We are going to see how each of these axes deals with a critical area of life & plays off each other to create balance & harmony.
The core idea of this analysis is that opposites are complimentary. The opposite houses apparently look opposite in their themes, but are actually complimentary to each other when closely observed. Understanding that dynamic can be very profound in its own way.
In this article I talk about the 5–11 axis or the expression axis:
5th house is about our unique self-expression. Everyone is imperfect, but in different ways. These imperfections make us unique, make us who we are. Here, our uniqueness finds expression. Truthfully expressing our nature is the goal of this house, here we don’t care how other people judge us for our unique nature, we only concern ourselves about being truthful & honest in our expression.
11th house is about living not as an individual, but as part of a community. Here we experience that we belong to the human tribe, we are a small cog in the giant machine of the society. Our individual nature & existence is irrelevant here, only serving our social role matters. Here, we form social connections with people around us & build our own social network.
If the 5th is well developed, we are confident in our own skin, we are proud of our own unique nature, thus we can express them truthfully. Often, that expression is perceived as art & romantic love. Once we are proud of our unique nature, we feel resourceful & we are willing to share our unique resources to the society. That brings us to the 11th house where we attract people by expressing our unique nature. The more like-minded people we attract, the more our unique nature gets validated by them, which reinforces the 5th house.
Thus, 5th & 11th reinforces each other. We cannot develop them separately.
If 5th is stronger than 11th, a person deeply cares about being truthful & uncompromising about being real in their expression, no matter how unattractive that makes them to other people. As a result, this behavior repels people away from them prohibiting them from developing their tribe in 11th house.
If 11th is stronger than 5th, a person is willing to modify his personality to a great extent in order to fit into a social circle. As a result, they have a tribe, but it’s not their own. They are not truthful in their expression. They are wearing a mask of a different person just to fit in the tribe.
The 5th stronger than 11th makes a loner who is truthful & express himself with utmost honestly.
The 11th stronger than 5th makes a popular person who appears to be attractive from a distance, but up up-close turns out to be vain & fake.
When both houses develop equally, we have a person who is truthful. That truthful nature has a certain charisma which attracts like minded people towards him. Thus, the 5–11 axis is balanced.
