As any current or former student will tell you, I’m a collector of quotations. I must have a thousand scraps of paper lying around with quotations that spoke to me at some point in time. If you open up any notebook in my home, you will find scribblings from books, articles, interviews, etc. that resonated with whatever I was experiencing at the time. Recently I found a Hunter S. Thompson quote that got my wheels turning.
“Sex without love is as hollow a ridiculous as love without sex.”
Preach Hunter. Preach.
Others have spoken to me as well over the years.
“Men in their forties are like the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle: tricky, complicated, and you’re never really sure you got the right answer.” — Carrie Bradshaw, Sex in the City
I found that one when I divorced the girls’ dad and was dating three men in their mid-forties. I was 35 at the time. I thought it was so refreshing to date older men. Boy was I a fool.
“I remember when I was a kid I used to come home from Sunday School and my mother would get drunk and try to make pancakes” — George Carlin
I have never made pancakes drunk. But then again, I’ve never been particularly good at making pancakes.
This one truly smacked me in the face with a dose of reality:
“The Irish don’t know what they want and are prepared to fight to the death to get it.” — Sidney Littlewood
I really don’t think I need to discuss why that one resonates with me. Self explanatory.
Then there’s this one:
“I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that. — Lloyd Dobbler, “Say Anything,” 1989
All of us wanted Lloyd Dobbler. I mean the boombox in the rain. Lloyd doesn’t exist though. And I wonder if he did, would we know what to do with him? And wouldn’t we get tired of him? By now he’d be about 46 years old. Would we still love him now?
