The DNS server assigns human-friendly host names to IP addresses. DHCP ensures that each IP address is only used by one host at a time within the specified ranges. The resources are assigned an IP address for a “lease time” during which they can utilize it. Their network connection has a globally unique MAC address; the DHCP server associates and remembers the IP addresses and MAC so that it may access utilities for which it has a “lease.”

For example, if a lease period is only 12 hours, fresh IP addresses are assigned on a regular basis, much like workstations in an office. This is normally not an issue for “ordinary” end users, but it might be difficult to report on NetFlow when traffic is related between specific hosts based on IP addresses. Users changing IP addresses make it impossible to report on individual user activities. Some enterprises lengthen their lease terms in order to reduce IP churn.

Increasing the lease term has repercussions; for example, setting the lease time to 30 days allocates the supplied IP address to the specified host for 30 days. The DHCP server won’t allocate additional if all IP addresses are currently in use since there aren’t any more available. More capacity may be available as a result of low lease durations, but tracking is more difficult. High lease durations simplify tracking but complicate IP address resourcing. How IPAM Works?
