Idea Generation Part 2
How Might We Statements:

Set Up:
The original plan/people I had scheduled to do this backed out but I went to visit my best friend over Halloween and made and her her family/friends help me instead. I conducted this brainstorming session in the kitchen of their apartment on Friday afternoon. I used blank note cards and then assigned a different colored sharpie to each person so I could their ideas apart. The Four people besides for me that participated in this brainstorming session were Chelsea, Sarah, Gus, and Jose.

- Chelsea has been my best friend since we went post secondary together our last two years of high school. She is currently 19 and a freshman in college studying marketing.
- Sarah is Chelsea’s older sister who is 22 and currently in an Interdisciplinary Studies program (Business and something else I can’t remember).
- Gus is Sarah’s boyfriend who is 25 and almost done with his teaching degree.
- Jose is Gus’s best friend who is 23 and working two full time jobs.
Warm Up:
For my warmup we all stood in a circle and someone stood in the middle. The person in the middle closed their eyes and sun in a circle counter clockwise while counting down from a number of their choice. Meanwhile, the people in the outer circle walk clockwise and once the person in the middle is done counting whoever they land on is next. We also played a couple of the games I learned during the improv session.

Brainstorm Session:
After I set up and we played the warmup games I introduced my topic “Garden Hose Nozzle” and what a brainstorming session was/what we were going to do. I also explained that there is no bad ideas and that it is okay to have fun.
To start off we spent about 12 minutes on just general ideas for garden hose nozzles, there was a good variety of different ideas. Then I read my HMW statements and spent about 10 minutes on each of them. There was less ideas for these, but still a decent amount.
Next we did the silent sorting for about 10 minutes, categories were sort of split into things such as “Not a garden hose nozzle, but idea similar,” “silly ideas,” “easy to use,” etc., but obviously not named at this point. Then, I gave them 5 star stickers each and they marked their favorites. Once we had used stickers to vote we stepped back, discussed why these ideas were our favorite and why we had put certain ideas into certain categories. People tended to lean towards ideas that were unique like a gray water system and towards ideas that would make watering plants more convenient for all.
In total we had 88 ideas which is about 2.75 ideas per minute.
The top ten ideas from the brainstorm are:
- “Alexa turn on the hose” -Jose
- “Harry Potter wand that sprays water when you say aguamenti” -Chelsea
- “Gray water tank so you don’t waste water” -Gus
- “Hose and Nozzle that attach to the arm rails of a wheelchair” -Sarah
- “Nozzle that clicks onto hose so you don’t have to twist it on” -Sarah
- “Phone controlled app that connects to nozzle and identifies what plants are what and how much to water them” -Chelsea
- “Hose nozzle that is shaped like a stake that can be put into the ground and works are a sprinkler too” -Jose
- “watering can that has a hose attached so you never run out” -Jose
- “Remote control car that you can drive around your yard and it has a tank of water on it that will water your grass” -Gus
- “Nozzle that counts how many times you have used or or how much water you have used” -Sarah
