Are you self-employed?

[Answer honestly] Currently, I’m not. I’ve worked in traditional employment settings most of my career. However, the self-employment path holds a certain appeal.

Have you always been self-employed?

No, I have not. Though I’ve freelanced some on the side, full-blown self-employment was never my primary source of income.

Why did you start your own business?

[If you ARE self-employed, explain. Otherwise, provide hypothetical motivations] I haven’t started a business yet, but the idea is compelling — building something of my own, having more control over my schedule, and the potential for higher earnings.

What are some things that you need to consider when starting your own business?

There’s a lot! Firstly, a viable business idea and understanding your target market. Financial planning, registration/legal stuff, building clientele, and being your own marketing team…

Is it easy to start a business in your country?

There’s moderate ease with bureaucratic steps, though ease ultimately depends on the business type. Certain industries have lower barriers to entry than others. Access to funds is often a major hurdle.

Have you ever worked for a self-employed person?

Yes, when I was younger I did [mention the type of work] for a [self-employed person’s profession]. This gave me insight into the work ethic it takes, while witnessing some firsthand pros and cons.

Would you be happier if you were self-employed?

Perhaps with the right venture! Traditional jobs certainly have perks — the predictability and built-in social structure. Yet, being self-employed matches my personality in some ways — I’m quite self-driven.

What are some of the difficulties of being self-employed?

It’s definitely not for the faint of heart! Income instability, especially initially. You wear many hats — accountant, marketer, not just your area of expertise. Also, that lack of built-in work-life separation can be tough.
